Travel

Here’s everything you need to know to get to San Miguel de Allende without the stress. Whether you’re flying in, booking a shuttle, or figuring out how to get around town, we’ve got you covered. It’s easier than you think—and totally worth the trip.

Airports

You’ve got three solid airport options, all safe and commonly used by travelers heading to SMA:

1. Querétaro International Airport (QRO)

  • About 1–1.5 hours from San Miguel

  • Small, easy to navigate, and often the most stress-free option

2. León/Guanajuato International Airport (BJX)

  • About 1.5 hours from San Miguel

  • Larger than QRO with more flight options, especially from the U.S.

3. Mexico City International Airport (MEX)

  • About 3.5–4 hours from San Miguel

  • Best for international travelers or those using flight points/miles

  • Pro tip: You can also spend a night or two in CDMX and drive in!

Airport Transportation

Once you land, here are two great shuttle services we recommend:

BajíoGo

  • Offers private and shared shuttles from all three airports

  • We recommend private shuttles—shared seats are a bit narrow and space for luggage can be tight

  • Safe, reliable, and responsive via WhatsApp

Angelica Tours

  • For a more luxury private experience

  • English-speaking drivers, flexible scheduling, and luxury vehicles

Getting Around Town

San Miguel is super walkable and the main way to get around, but when you need wheels:

Uber is widely used and very affordable

Green taxis are also available throughout town, but usually cost a bit more than Uber

SMA Shuttles: For large groups, day trips or vineyard visits, SMA Shuttles is your best bet for private transportation.

Local Bus (Purple & White): A super affordable way to get around or reach places like the Escondido hot springs—just $8–10 MXN per ride. Buses run daily from 7 AM–9 PM, but routes and timing can be unpredictable, so Uber is often easier for most visitors.

Helpful Tips

  • Download WhatsApp: It’s how locals, drivers, and most businesses communicate.

  • Download LaComer App: They will deliver groceries to your AirBnB for free! Both City Market and La Comer use the same app. City Market is better for high end products.

  • UberEats & Rappi: Both are available for restaurant delivery

  • Have pesos on hand: Many places take cards, but cash is helpful for tips, taxis, and smaller vendors. There are ATM's around the main square.

  • Plan airport pickups early: Especially for shared shuttles, as they fill up quickly.

  • Tips: Generally plan on 10-20% for transportation and restaurants based on experience.

  • Money: It's easiest to get pesos from just withdrawing cash from any ATM. They will be at the airport or in Centro.
